Paavo Nurmi was a Finnish runner renowned for his prowess in middle-distance and long-distance events. Known as the “Flying Finn”, he dominated the distance running scene during the 1920s. Nurmi set 22 official world records across distances ranging from 1500 meters to 20 kilometers and earned nine gold and three silver medals in 12 events at the Summer Olympic Games. At the height of his career, Nurmi was undefeated in 121 races covering distances from 800 meters and beyond. Over his 14-year career, he never lost a cross-country race or a 10,000-meter event.
